British Era of Lord Wellesley

The Expansion of the British During the Era of Lord Wellesley

  • The second major expansion of British rule in India occurred during the era of Lord Wellesley (1798-1805).
  • Till this time, the British policy was to strengthen the position of its benefits and resources, and that new territories should be won only when it is possible to do this safely without making Indian rulers as enemies.
  • Wellesley decided to bring as many Indian states as possible under British control.
  • In order to fulfill his political objectives, Wellesley resorted to three measures Subsidiary Alliance, open war and seizing the rulers who had already been subjugated.
  • According to the policy of its Subsidiary Alliance, the ruler of an associate Indian state had to keep the British army in his state and had to make a grant for its maintenance.
  • Sometimes a ruler gave away any part of his kingdom instead of giving annual grants. According to the subsidiary alliance, the Indian ruler had to keep a British resident in his court. Without the approval of the British not to keep any European in his service and promised not to hold any talks with another Indian ruler without consulting the Governor-General. In return, the British promised to protect that ruler from enemies. Also promising not to interfere in the internal affairs of the ally, which was seldom fulfilled.
